Essential accessories for your gym session
Why the right accessories make a difference
You have found your gym, your program is set, your nutrition is dialed in — but have you thought about your personal gear? The right accessories are not luxury items: they improve your comfort, safety, and sometimes even your performance. No need to spend a fortune: a few targeted investments are enough to transform your gym experience.
At Ma Salle, our private gym in Paris, the essentials are provided — dumbbells, bars, machines, mats. But your personal accessories travel with you and help make every session optimal.
Performance essentials
A lifting belt is probably the most useful accessory for heavy exercises like squats and deadlifts. It does not directly protect the back, contrary to popular belief, but provides a surface for your abs to push against, increasing intra-abdominal pressure and trunk stability. Choose a leather belt, 10 cm wide, with uniform thickness.
Wrist wraps stabilize the wrist joint during pressing movements and overhead work. Lifting straps help maintain your grip on the bar when your forearms give out before your target muscles, especially on deadlifts and rows.
- Lifting belt: essential once you work above 70% of your 1RM on squats or deadlifts.
- Wrist wraps: useful for heavy bench press and overhead press.
- Lifting straps: to avoid being limited by grip strength on back exercises.
Everyday comfort
A good pair of shoes suited to your training is fundamental. For strength training, choose flat, firm-soled shoes (squat shoes or minimalist footwear) that provide a stable base. Running shoes, with their cushioned and heel-elevated soles, are unsuitable for strength work.
Invest in a quality water bottle of at least 750 ml, ideally insulated to keep your water cool throughout the session. A training log or tracking app lets you record your weights, sets, and reps — this is the foundation of progression.
Finally, sweat-resistant wireless earbuds are a major asset for staying focused. In a private gym at Ma Salle in Paris, you can also play your music through the gym speakers, but earbuds remain handy for commuting.
Recovery accessories you should not overlook
A foam roller is a modest investment that pays dividends. A few minutes of rolling on the quads, hamstrings, and upper back before or after training improves mobility and reduces muscular tension. A lacrosse ball complements the roller for targeting more specific areas like the glutes or shoulder blades.
Resistance bands are a versatile tool for warm-ups, muscle activation, and assisted stretching. Carry two or three of different resistances in your bag — they weigh almost nothing and open up a range of additional exercises. With these few accessories and the professional environment at Ma Salle, you have everything you need for productive and enjoyable sessions.
