How to warm up properly before a strength training session

Why warming up is essential before strength training

Too many gym-goers skip the warm-up and jump straight into heavy lifts. Yet a proper warm-up prepares your muscles, tendons, and joints for the intense effort ahead. It gradually raises your core temperature, improves blood flow, and dramatically reduces the risk of injury.

At Ma Salle, our private gym in Paris, you have all the space and time you need to complete a thorough warm-up without pressure or waiting. That is one of the key advantages of training in an environment reserved entirely for you.

General warm-up: raising your body temperature

Start with 5 to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular activity. The rowing machine, stationary bike, or brisk walking on the treadmill are all excellent options. The goal is not to exhaust yourself but to progressively increase your heart rate to about 60-70% of your maximum.

During this phase, you raise your intramuscular temperature, making the fibers more elastic and responsive. Synovial fluid distributes more evenly within your joints, ensuring optimal lubrication. You should feel a gentle warmth spreading throughout your body.

Joint warm-up and mobility work

After the cardio warm-up, spend 5 minutes on joint mobility. Perform controlled rotations of every joint you plan to use during the session:

  • Shoulders: forward and backward arm circles, then elbow circles
  • Hips: hip circles, leg swings front-to-back and side-to-side
  • Knees: gentle flexions, soft rotations in a semi-bent position
  • Ankles and wrists: rotations in both directions, especially important before squats or bench press

This step is often overlooked, but it makes a real difference in movement quality and joint longevity. In a private gym in Paris like Ma Salle, you can take the time to do each movement properly without feeling rushed.

Specific warm-up: progressive sets

Before each main exercise in your session, perform 2 to 3 warm-up sets with increasing weight. For example, if your working weight on the bench press is 80 kg, proceed as follows:

  • 1 set of 12 reps with the empty bar (20 kg)
  • 1 set of 8 reps at 40 kg
  • 1 set of 5 reps at 60 kg

These progressive sets prime the specific motor pattern of the movement and allow your nervous system to recruit muscle fibers efficiently. Do not skip steps: every warm-up set is an investment in your performance and safety.

A complete warm-up takes between 12 and 20 minutes. It is time you will never regret spending. Book your session at Ma Salle in Paris and enjoy an optimal warm-up in a calm, fully equipped setting.
